Pico de Loro, the breathtaking coastal retreat in Nasugbu, Batangas, is undergoing an exciting transformation under the leadership of its new general manager, Maxi Gavino. A seasoned hospitality executive with decades of experience, Gavino brings a fresh perspective to the resort, blending global expertise with a deep appreciation for Filipino culture and sustainability.
Since stepping into her role, Gavino has wasted no time in implementing her vision. The resort is currently undergoing a wave of renovations, expanding its amenities while enhancing its commitment to eco-friendly practices.
“We’re expanding a lot and modernizing the facilities to align with evolving guest needs,” she said. This includes the introduction of electric vehicle charging stations, more co-working spaces, and wellness-focused concepts that promote healthy, sustainable living.

Beyond infrastructure, Gavino is determined to strengthen Pico de Loro’s local identity. “When guests visit, I want them to bring Batangas with them,” she said. This philosophy is reflected in everything from the resort’s welcome amenities to curated guest experiences inspired by the region’s traditions.
At the core of her leadership is a commitment to mentorship and development. “I want to train, mentor, and develop people,” she said, a mindset that has helped propel many of her former team members into leadership roles across the industry. Now, at Pico de Loro, she aims to cultivate a new generation of hospitality professionals who are not only skilled but also deeply connected to the resort’s values of sustainability and cultural appreciation.
Gavino’s path to Pico de Loro is a story of adventure and relentless passion. Her hospitality journey began unexpectedly at 19, after earning a degree in AB Linguistics from UP Diliman. She initially planned to take a break, but at the suggestion of her sister, who was then working as an HR at a food manufacturing company, she started working in the executive office of the Fort Ilocandia Hotel. That experience ignited a love for the industry, exposing her to high-profile events and dignitaries.

Her career took a fascinating detour when she ventured into humanitarian work. “It was incredibly fulfilling,” she said. “Hotels are about helping people enjoy life, but this was about helping people rebuild theirs.”
Eventually, she returned to hospitality, sharpening her skills at renowned brands such as Shangri-La and Conrad. Her 18-year tenure in Bangkok proved invaluable, teaching her to navigate cultural nuances and adapt her communication style. “I learned to focus on action and outcomes rather than perfect grammar,” she said, a lesson she now applies in leading her diverse team at Pico de Loro.

Gavino’s Bangkok journey was a masterclass in international hospitality management. At Conrad Bangkok, she initially served as director of events management before ascending to director of sales. Her achievements there were significant—she was even honored in the Bangkok Art Center as a Filipino who had made notable contributions internationally.
Her career trajectory in Bangkok took an exciting turn when she was offered a role at the Centara Grand Bangkok Convention Center at CentralWorld. For five years, she served as executive assistant manager, managing a complex that integrated a luxury hotel, massive mall, and convention center.

Another remarkable chapter was her involvement with Siri Sala, a unique luxury villa project she helped build near the Chao Phraya River.
“Each experience in Bangkok taught me something different about hospitality, culture, and international business,” Gavino said. “From managing royal protocols to creating exclusive luxury experiences, these years shaped my understanding of global hospitality.”

Now back in the Philippines, Gavino sees immense potential in Pico de Loro’s 13 coves and stunning landscapes. Gavino particularly wants to focus more on expanding the MICE (meetings, incentives, conference, exhibitions) offerings at Pico de Loro by breaking away from traditional conference room setups.
“Meetings today are no longer confined to classroom-style arrangements,” she said. “We’re offering limitless opportunities for organizations to meet in unique settings—under a tree, by the pool, or overlooking the beach.”

The resort is positioning itself as a flexible MICE destination that can customize experiences for various client needs. From team-building activities to multi-generational corporate retreats, Pico de Loro is developing packages that cater to diverse corporate requirements.
With her wealth of experience, a strong vision for sustainability, and genuine dedication to local culture, Gavino is set to steer Pico de Loro toward an exciting new era—one that marries world-class hospitality with the rich heritage of Batangas.
