In a remarkable display of creativity and community spirit, lyf Malate Manila has set a new Guinness World Record for the largest origami star display, showcasing an astounding 100,000 miniature stars.

The impressive feat shattered the previous record held by China, which featured 57,552 stars in 2023. Kazuyoshi “Kazu” Kirimura, the official adjudicator from Guinness World Records, confirmed that lyf Malate Manila’s display had officially surpassed the previous record.

“This record is a testament to our collaborative effort and unity amongst our community and partners,” said Joyce Pascual-Agsaway, known as The Life Champion of lyf Malate Manila. “It’s also a celebration of our first year, which has been a roller coaster ride of big challenges overcome by big wins.”

The creation of the 100,000 origami stars was a true labor of love, involving the entire lyf crew and the broader Ascott community. For months, they meticulously crafted each star, working together to bring this vision to life. The display itself holds deep historical significance, reflecting the rich history of the Manila Galleon trade.

“Historically, this [where lyf Malate Manila now stands in Malate] was the central business district of Manila, and for the traders to actually be guided going here, they found the stars,” said Agsaway, adding a layer of cultural appreciation to the achievement.

The stars are currently on display in the lobby of lyf Malate Manila and will remain there for a set period before being repurposed into furniture, demonstrating lyf Malate Manila’s commitment to sustainability. The stars were made from recycled paper, and the repurposing process will be carried out by a local sustainable partner, further highlighting lyf’s dedication to environmental responsibility.

The success of this project was made possible through the support of the Torre Lorenzo Development Corporation, the property developer of lyf Malate Manila, which contributed 30,000 stars to the display.

The event was a record-setting occasion, as well as a celebration of lyf’s first anniversary in the Philippines. Since launching in Manila, the lyf brand has also opened a location in Cebu City.

To achieve the Guinness World Record, lyf Malate Manila mobilized its entire network of properties across the Philippines. “We put together everyone,” Agsaway said. “We have a total of 17 operating properties in the Philippines [under the Ascott brand], and everyone made a contribution.”

This collaborative effort included hosting origami folding parties for staff and guests and engaging the local community.

The event concluded with a festive after-party, where guests continued to celebrate the success, headlined by a performance by local artist, Maki, known for his hit song “Dilaw” and “Saan?”

With this Guinness World Record, lyf Malate Manila has reinforced its role as a cultural and sustainable hub in Manila. As the stars continue to shine brightly in the lobby, they prove what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision and purpose.
