Thirty finalists made it to the ASEAN-wide photo competition Zooming in on Biodiversity organized by the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) in collaboration with German Development Bank (KfW) and the European Union (EU).

The 30 entries out of the 600 photo submissions, which all focus on nature, were announced during a live-streamed event on Facebook.

“The remarkable photos give us glimpses of the gifts and magnificence of nature and its valuable role in our daily lives and in building a better normal. As we raise appreciation for nature around us, may we also draw inspiration to take bold transformative steps to conserve our remaining biodiversity,” said ACB Executive Director Theresa Mundita Lim Lim.

ACB’s photo competition has the overall theme Healing with Biodiversity: Building a Better Normal. Launched on August 17, it was open to all amateur and professional photographers from the 10 ASEAN member states.

The finalists have been selected based on a set of criteria, such as relevance to the subject, composition, creativity, and technical excellence.

Photo submissions in the general category illustrate biodiversity’s role in the time of a global health crisis. The category has two sub-themes: “A Glimpse of a Better Normal”, to show life and nature in the time of lockdowns and restrictions on mobility; and “The Macro Life,” to magnify the species that can easily be found in familiar and accessible spaces such as homes and gardens.

Special category depicts “Life Within and Around ASEAN Heritage Parks,” where photo submissions highlight the natural and cultural richness of ASEAN Heritage Parks or protected areas in the ASEAN region recognized for their outstanding wilderness and biodiversity values.

The winning photos and photographers will be announced on October 16. The names of the winners will be posted on the ACB’s social media accounts.

The grand winner will receive a prize worth USD1,700, while the second and third prize winners will get USD1,200 and USD600, respectively. The special category winner will receive USD400.

The People’s Choice award, on the other hand, will be given to the entries with the most number of positive reactions on Facebook. The People’s Choice awardee for the general category will receive USD400. Cash prize for the photo with the most number of positive reactions under the Special Category will receive USD200.
