The Philippines is making waves in sustainable tourism with the launch of the inaugural Philippine Dive Experience, an ambitious initiative designed to spotlight dive tourism while championing environmental conservation.

Held recently in Anilao, Batangas—a diver’s haven known for its rich marine biodiversity—the event brought together diplomats, stakeholders, and underwater enthusiasts to celebrate the country’s unparalleled diving destinations and their potential to boost both local communities and the national economy.

While the Philippines has long been a favorite among divers, the Philippine Dive Experience brings new momentum to the industry. In 2023 alone, dive tourism contributed P73 billion to the economy, underscoring its importance in driving both local livelihoods and national growth. But it’s not just about the numbers—this initiative is about creating lasting connections, both with the marine environment and the communities that depend on it.

Participants were treated to a blend of adventure and advocacy. From trying out Discover Scuba Diving for beginners to joining coastal and underwater cleanup drives, the event highlighted how tourism can harmonize with conservation. Even seasoned divers were struck by the beauty of Anilao’s coral gardens and marine life, which are second to none.

Diving with purpose

Tourism secretary Christina Garcia Frasco emphasized that the Philippine Dive Experience is as much a showcase as it is a call to action. “If we do not prioritize conservation, we risk losing these marine wonders and depriving future generations of sources of income and livelihood,” she said.

The event also showcased a collaborative model for sustainable tourism. From small dive shops to international diplomats, everyone had a role to play in protecting marine ecosystems. Initiatives like artificial reef-building underscored the commitment to balance development with preservation.

“Dive tourism has long been one of the strongest products of Philippine tourism,” Frasco said. “This initiative not only highlights our biodiversity but also the heart and soul of our nation.”

More than just diving

Beyond the underwater attractions, the Philippine Dive Experience offered a glimpse into Filipino culture and community spirit. Local businesses, from dive operators to tour guides, reaped the benefits of hosting an international audience. Diplomats and participants also engaged in cultural exchanges, reminding everyone that tourism is as much about people as it is about places.

Plans to expand the program to other dive hotspots like Cebu, Davao, and Coron promise to further uplift coastal communities while strengthening the Philippines’ reputation as a world-class dive destination.

The Philippine Dive Experience is a movement. By marrying the allure of adventure with a commitment to sustainability, the program sets a high standard for responsible tourism. As the world turns its gaze to the Philippines’ underwater wonders, it’s clear that this initiative is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the country’s tourism story.

After all, diving here isn’t just about what you see below the surface—it’s about what you take back with you—a newfound respect for nature and a deeper connection to a country as vibrant as its coral reefs.
